Bestiary

First a few example creatures that I came up with after wiping the dust off of my 5th edition battle book (wow, it's nice having every creature in the Warhammer world in one easy to reference place). Then I'll show a few example creatures of mine, showing every process and calculation from start to finish. Then anything goes!!! All other submissions will go after the last of my monsters.

5th edition battle book monsters that didn't make it

Cockatrice
MWSBSSTWIALdSave
Cockatrice440442436-
Special Rules:
Fear: The Cockatrice causes fear.
Petrify: In the shooting phase, the cockatrice may try to petrify one person who they can see, and who can see them within 6". If the cockatrice is in Close Combat, they must try to petrify someone in Base-to-base contact. The affected trooper must pass an initiative test to look away. If they fail, they suffer D3 wounds with no armour save (they may take ward saves) as they start getting turned to stone. The affected model may not move until the cockatrice's next turn if they suffer wounds from it and survive (remember that units move at the speed of their slowest model).
Fly: A Cockatrice has great wings and can Fly.
Points cost: 102
May be fielded as a Special choice with 1-5 cockatrices in the unit, or as a mount for a hero or lord.

Dragons
These rules can be used to make dragons. I will not make these rules for many reasons. A) I'm sure many people only read those long Monster Design rules because I promised them Emperor and Great dragons. I'd hate to disappoint them all by making them myself. B) You could easily make all the colour variants using the various shooting rules in the MDR. I've intentionally made them extremely adaptable and versatile. EG: Black dragons Have Horrible foulness and Gruesome Impact. Maybe a higher level black dragon has more Horrible foulness and a stronger breath attack. C) I haven't got the time to write all these rules for every colour and every dragon level combination. Besides, I'm sure you'd have more fun personalising your dragons as you make them (I'm going to give my noble white dragon the Mark of Khorne, 10 attacks and the bound fireball spell so that they are absolutely insane and loaded with firepower, yes that sounds fair!!).

Giant Scorpion
MWSBSSTWIALdSave
Giant Scorpion5405441274+
Special Rules:
Pincers: Enemies who get caught in the scorpion's pincers rarely escape. If not snipped in half, the Scorpion is sure to finish them with it's tail. To represent this, the scorpion has the Killing Blow special ability
Fear: A Giant Scorpion causes fear as described in the Warhammer Rulebook.
Iron Hard Shell: The monster's save cannot be modified by the strength of their opponents' attacks. The save can still be modified by other abilities such as Armour piercing (handguns, the Biting Blade and similar items), and the save can be ignored completely by weapons / attacks that have these abilities.

May be fielded as a Special choice with 1-5 scorpions in a unit, or as a mount for a hero or lord

Hmmm, I think that's it as far as old monsters go, all the ones beyond "G" have been redone!!

My own creations

Ellandrail, Were-druid of the Wood
Step 1:
Ellandiial was always a bit of a loner. Rather than staying near other Wood Elven communities, he was known to explore the forest, talking to the animals, asking them how they were. That doesn't mean he didn't care about the wood elves, he was one of the most patriotic elves ever! He absolutely despised anyone entering his homeland. Once, in Loren there was a horrible battle against an orc army. It started with a group of barely 100 waywatchers observing the thousands of orcs as they started cutting down forests. Ellandrail heard the sounds of the horde from nearby and went to look. Just as he came, the waywatchers let out their first volley of arrows into the horde. The orcs held their axes high above their heads and charged into the forest. Suddenly, wolves jumped at the orcs, while Bears smashed their way through the horde. The creatures were brought down, but not before the waywatchers had escaped into the forest and unleashed some more arrows. The enraged orcs followed the nimble elves, and soon the waywatchers had no choice but to counterattack. Each took town many orcs with swift movements and by ambushing the orc parties hunting the waywatchers, but eventually the orc numbers were overwhelming the elite elves. Ellandrail did everything he could but couldn't swing the battle. At night, after 10 hours of fighting, something amazing happened, Ellandrail turned into a bear!! He had no control over his actions, he roared loudly and charged into the middle of the orc horde. Other creatures followed him, and the few surviving waywatchers saw this as their only hope. In the combined charge led by Ellandrail, many orcs were trampled, clawed and shot. The orcs soon fled as the small army rampaged through their lines. The Wolves and bears gave chase, running more into the ground while the elves finished them off. The battle was won!!

Since this battle, Ellandrail's rage can be heard every night. His roar can be heard and the creatures of the wood answer and follow him. He has been banned from going near any of the communities, but will still fight whenever given the chance by his enemies. Some recent reports say that Ellandrail is becoming more of a bear as life goes on. His howl can be heard earlier every night. If a human or orc can hear this call, they'd be advised to turn around and leave the forest, for the wrath of wolf, bear and wizard are about to come down on them!!

Size : normal
Race: Wood Elf

Step 2:
MWSBSSTWIALdSave
Ellandrail550554859-
Step 3:
Ellandrail is a normal sized monster with 4 Wounds. His defensive Basecost is therefore 60 (4X15).
This is modified by his Toughness of 5. Looking at the table, Toughness 5 and -save has a +5% modifier, resulting in 63 points spent on defense.
None of the defensive special abilities really suit this character
Step 4:
As a normal sized monster with S5 and A5, the formula for basecost is 2X5X5 = 50
This has a +20% modifier for WS5 and a +50% modifier for I8 = a 70% modifier.
To represent his Bestial Rage and raw power, I think he deserves a Nasty Attack, doing D3 wounds per hit. This has a +200% modifier, resulting in a 270% total modifier.
270% of 50 = 135. 135 +50 = 185. I spent 185 points on his Close combat power.
Step 5:
He doesn't really sound like a "Spit" or "Breathe" person, does he?
No ranged attacks then
Step 6:
This is where we see his real power!!!
Level 2 Wizard, must use beasts lore - 150 points
Enraged State: Has access to "The Bear's Anger" as a bound ability. This costs 60 points and has a power level of 3.
Furious charge: Has access to "The Wolf Hunts" as a bound ability. This costs 55 points and has a power level of 5.
Fearsome: Causes Fear. 5 pts
Hates Army: Orcs and Goblins. costs 10points (for hating an army).
Move through woods without penalty: 5pts
Subtotal: 285 pts
Step 7:
Total = 63 + 185 + 285 = 533
Ld = 9, 9X2 = 18% modifier.
M = 5, 5X2.5 = 12.5% modifier
Total of 30.5% modifier to cost.
30.5% of 533 = 162.525 points
533 + 162 = 695 points.
Being an unridden normal sized monster, it takes up a Rare choice.
